Selling books is hard
This is not just me complaining. Selling books is hard for everybody!
Authors, agents, publishers, distributors, and booksellers all have challenges to get good books in front of interested readers who are willing to buy them. I’ve even heard Stephen King and John Grisham complain that it’s getting harder – and they still sell a million books a year. For the rest of us, we just have to keep working hard, writing, publishing, marketing and engaging with readers and booksellers, trying to be authentic, enthusiastic, patient and persistent, and accepting each small victory as a satisfying step in the right direction.
And it’s been a good week for me to feel like I’m on the right track and making progress. I learned a lot more about the book business in frank conversations with bookstore owners; placed some books in new locations; and received better-than-usual royalty payments this month!
More exciting news:
My PR and promo efforts are starting to show results in getting me and my writing in front of more readers.
I’ve had a short story, Family First, accepted for publication in Mystery & Suspense Magazine – Fall Issue; I’ll be on an author panel at the Bouchercon World Mystery Convention, with over 1600 writers, readers and fans attending in San Diego in September; and I was recorded today for a future episode of Carter Wilson’s Making It Up for his author conversations on YouTube. It’s all part of the fun, but easily neglected while trying to get the next novel, short story or article written.
